2nd Annual Beauty Zone: Oakland is Fly

If you’re in Oakland today–you’re in for a treat. Antique Edutainment, Beija Flor Naturals and the Umoja Marketplace will be hosting the 2nd Annual Beauty Zone at the Life is Living Festival at Defremery Park in West Oakland. Powered by Youth Speaks, the theme 8th Annual Life is Living Festival pays tribute of how music and dance have helped sustain life in Oakland, featuring many of the best DJ’s, dancers, dance companies, and music Tha O has to offer.

The mission of the “Oakland is Fly” Beauty Zone and Marketplace is to challenge the Eurocentric standard of beauty by positioning Black women in particular, women of color in general, as the standard of beauty and providing goods, information and services for the specific need of Black skin, hair and overall health. There will be vendors selling apparel, jewelry and skin/body/hair products and a spa tent where waxing, facials, nail art, henna, make up and hair services will happen, as well as product demos. In addition, there will be a social media campaign called #oaklandisfly where people around the park will be taking pictures of people who embody the “Oakland Aesthetic” and streaming them all day on social media, as well as a professional photographer taking pictures of folks.

Celebrate Oakland is Fly On Social Media!

Oakland is Fly is the meme generator and some social media dialogue about personal style with super twins Melorra and Melonie Green as well as a photo campaign day of with Emani Dawson Bey. She will be walking around the park capturing the flyness of Oakland and putting together a photo essay.
The zone is about promoting a personal standard of beauty especially as women of color in a Eurocentic society. It is also about using style to embody the beauty on the inside on the outside. Of the event, Candice said “we also want to support local black businesses that sell black beauty products. This is a personal value of mine. I believe that to true be free, we start with a love of self, which leads us to love each other”.
Candice  will also be performing on the Oakland is Fly Stage at 4pm with a 7 piece band and special guests Lalin from The Seshen, Sonia Whittle, Cheikh M’baye and Kev Choice. She will also be dropping a new song called “Never Again” about her visit to the Elmina Castle in Ghana.

In honor of the event, we’re celebrating 12 natural Oakland beauties! Check them out below, and don’t forget to stop by  the Beauty Zone and celebrate the diversity of beauty!
