O’Brien and CNN are cool and all, but she’ll still speak truth to power.
CNN is one of the media giants that’s helping to “normalize white supremacy,” according to news personality Soledad O’Brien, a former host of the cable media network.
According to reports, from O’Brien’s perspective, the media has contorted to “make things seem equal” between top presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Unpacking her opinion on, of all places, CNN, to news host Brian Stelter, O’Brien stated:
“I’ve seen, on-air, white supremacists being interviewed because they are Trump delegates. And they do a five minute segment, the first minute or so talking about what they believe as white supremacists. So you have normalized that.”
Talk about being bold in the face of status quo.
O’Brien accused mainstream journalists of “failing” and opting not to interrogate the Trump campaign with the level of scrutiny his brand of speech has warranted. Instead of avoiding hard questions, she argues, reporters should be asking if Trump is:
“softening the ground for people — who are white supremacists, who are white nationalists, who would self-identify that way — to feel comfortable with their views being brought into the national discourse to the point where they can do a five minute interview happily on national television?”
Why did media outlets like CNN choose this particular approach to covering the Trump phenomenon? Simple. The angrier the audience, the bigger the ratings, said O’Brien, effectively excoriating her former employer:
“So hateful speech brings a really interested, angry audience. This is genius! We should do this more often. What shall we do when this election is over? We’re going to have to think about ways to really rile people up, make them angry and divide them.”
“Because,” she contended, heading into her final thoughts, “that is something that cable news, frankly, and everybody can cover really well.”
Damn.
Just goes to show that just because O’Brien is cool like that with CNN, and they helped her subsidize her production company, Starfish Media Group, that doesn’t mean she won’t speak truth to power.
